Seaford, Virginia is a York County Waterfront Community. York County, Virginia has a great reputation – for education, for job opportunities, for recreation. Among Hampton Roads residents, York County is considered one of the most desirable areas to live.
Seaford is an unincorporated community in York County made up of several different neighborhoods including Port Meyers, Sommerville, and Cheadle Loop. The neighborhoods feel charming; they have a Small Town, USA type feel with gorgeous lots, optional waterfront living, coastal Virginia landscapes and friendly people.
Many of the families in Seaford, Virginia make their living on the water; multiple creeks, including the Chisman Creek and Back Creek, lead out to the York River from Seaford. From the York River it’s a quick boat ride out to the Chesapeake Bay. Not every house is on the water, but opportunities to own a waterfront home abound in Seaford.
Even if you don’t live on the water there are several opportunities to live your best “salt life” dreams. There are places to catch minnows and hermit crabs, to crab and to dig for clams, and to live a life connected to the land and local waterways.

The schools in York County are highly ranked on GreatSchools.com. Seaford residents go to three main public schools; Seaford Elementary (8/10 on GreatSchools.com), Yorktown Middle School (5/10 on GreatSchools.com), and York High School (7/10 on GreatSchools.com). There are, of course, some nearby private school opportunities, too. Summit Christian Academy and Peninsula Academy in Yorktown and Hampton Roads Academy and Denbigh Baptist Christian School in nearby Newport News.

Houses there run the gamut; there are smaller single family homes in the $200s, plenty of buildable lots, and larger homes in the $500s. Many of the larger homes have high end finishes, pools, boat lifts, and more.

Unlike other communities like Kingsmill on the James in Williamsburg, no single type of architecture dominates the area. Seaford, Virginia is almost exclusively a residential area, and there are many different types of homes. Newer builds, smaller ranch style homes, and lots of different architectural styles are throughout the different residential communities in Seaford.
Though I like the pre-planned communities and I understand the appeal, I also really appreciate the varied housing in Seaford. It feels homey and you can find a home that suits your family or to build a new home to your taste.
Things to do in Seaford, Virginia and York County
There’s lots to do in and around Seaford, too. Yorktown Beach (on the York River) is nearby, including the Riverwalk restaurants, shops, and the Freight Shed (a popular spot for local weddings). There’s a Ben & Jerry’s, the Water Street Grille (with panoramic views of the York River), and the Yorktown Pub.
Historic Yorktown, Virginia is at the core of York County’s identity
Historic Yorktown isn’t far away, either. You can tour the battlefields and even still see the trenches and fortifications built there. It’s the actual site where the British General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayatte in the Revolutionary War. Visiting this historic area (especially around the 4th of July) will definitely give you goosebumps.
Near the battlefields, you can also see the Yorktown monument and lots of examples of early colonial Virginia architecture; some buildings date as far back as the 1700s. The Nelson Home is one example. It was the home of Thomas Nelson, namesake of Thomas Nelson Community College and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Nelson House is a beautiful example of early Georgian architecture. There are many other historic homes nearby, most of which are privately owned. The Carrot Tree is a popular lunch spot in a house dating to 1720 and it’s definitely worth a visit. Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters & Petite Café, located in the historic Cole Diggs house, is also a great place to grab a cup of expertly brewed coffee (I recommend Deadrise Blend organic coffee!) and a bite to eat. Afterward head down to the beach or spend the afternoon exploring Yorktown.
The historic area is part of the Colonial National Historic Park, which also includes the Yorktown Battle Visitor’s Center.
Parks, Boat Ramps, and Recreational Sports near Seaford, Virginia
There are also a number of really nice, well-maintained public parks with a number of different recreational activities. At Back Creek Park there’s a public boat ramp, kayaks for rent, a crabbing pier, a picnic area, and six lighted tennis courts. Brown Park has softball and soccer fields, basketball courts, a playground area, and a community center available for rental for large events. The 21 acre Kiln Creek Park has fields for baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer, as well as an extensive playground area.
Many of the parks offer recreational leagues for children and adults, so there are lots of opportunities for unstructured play and structured team sports, like soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, and tennis.
Shopping, Recreation, and Dining in York County
Though Seaford is a smaller area of larger York County, the county lines stretch up into parts of Williamsburg. A lot of popular destinations like Great Wolf Lodge– the area’s only indoor waterpark – are in York County!
There’s lots of shopping in the Lightfoot area of York County, including the Williamsburg Pottery and the Williamsburg Antique Mall.
Along Route 17 there are lots of places to eat and shop. Pop’s Diner and Shorty’s are York County fixtures, especially if you like a hearty country breakfast. Bean’s Ice Cream serves up some of Hershey’s most popular ice creams in an allergy-safe setting – an unusual (but very welcome) feature. Vintage Faire and York Village showcase collectibles and antiques.
Seaford is a beautiful place to live, and conveniently located near Newport News, Hampton, and Williamsburg. Because it’s almost exclusively residential, many of York County’s residents actually work in the neighboring cities. Still, because of the educational opportunities, the close knit communities, and the beautiful homes, people love to live in York County. Consider York County, but especially Seaford, as the perfect place to put down your roots in Hampton Roads.
